German Dative Prepositions

These prepositions always require the dative case: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber.

Key Rules

  • 1aus = from (origin), out of
  • 2bei = at, near, with (someone's place)
  • 3mit = with
  • 4nach = after, to (cities/countries)
  • 5seit = since, for (time)
  • 6von = from, of, by
  • 7zu = to (people/places)

Examples

Ich komme aus Deutschland.

I come from Germany.

Sie wohnt bei ihren Eltern.

She lives with her parents.

Ich fahre mit dem Bus.

I travel by bus.
